Boater Code of Conduct

Always wear a life jacket and dress for the water conditions

Boaters are encouraged to properly wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket or vest of the correct size and type anytime while boating. Life jackets come in a variety of styles and they save lives when properly worn.

Take a boating education course

Taking an approved boating safety education course is fun and a sure way to increase boating knowledge. Ohio law requires persons born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course if they operate any watercraft greater than 10 horsepower.

Be courteous at the launch ramp

Be courteous to other boaters when using a boat launch facility. When launching or loading your boat, secure your vessel at the courtesy dock. Do not cause delays for other boaters who are waiting to use the boat launch docks or lanes.

An enjoyable boating experience is one that is safe and fun. Plan ahead, know the potential hazards to safe navigation and file a float plan with a responsible person.

Get a vessel safety check

Begin the boating season by obtaining a vessel safety check. Such inspections help ensure that all required safety equipment is aboard the vessel and in good working order. Review your safety checklist before each boat outing.

Obey the boating laws
