Privatization of Wildlife: Access, Opportunities, and Challenges
Keynote Speaker
(only available to pre-registrants with the lunch option)

Steve Williams
President and CEO of the Wildlife Management Institute
This presentation explores the trend in fish and
wildlife conservation relevancy through time. Comparisons of conservation opportunities and challenges documented in five historic events (1908 Governors’ Conference, 1930 American Game Policy, 1973 North American Wildlife Policy, 2008 Conference on North American Wildlife Policy, and the recent America’s Great Outdoor Initiative) provide a lens through which we can discuss the current relevancy of conservation to the American public. The complexity of conservation issues operating because of and amid the backdrop of national and global priorities, coupled with drastic cultural change, have relegated conservation issues far back in our nation’s priorities. Agency efforts to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation for fish and wildlife conservation are presented and critiqued. Finally, the role that fish and wildlife privatization is addressed in the context of our profession’s relevancy for the future.
